Abstract
Certain residual solvents used in printing ink or adhesives can cause exposures related to food safety issues. In Korea, the toluene test method is applied to a synthetic resin packaging material that changes shape when the contents are added, and is analyzed using headspace gas chromatography/flame ionization detector (GC/FID) through manual injection. However, the process of manual injection of gas is inconvenient and requires proficiency of the experimenter, and there is a risk of lowering the accuracy and reproducibility. Therefore, this study aims to improve the efficiency and convenience by developing a method using a headspace autosampler. An analytical method was developed that considered the columns, temperatures, sample sizes, and incubation conditions. The analytical performance of the method was validated according to the JRC guidelines (EUR 24105 EN) and showed acceptable values in terms of linearity, precision, and accuracy. The effectiveness of the headspace GC/FID method was confirmed through interlaboratory validation.
